Edition: Tin
"1935", Commemorative Edition
Publisher: Parker Brothers - 1985
Dimensions of the tin: 27 x 27 x 8.4 cm
The game:
This set is "packed" in a very nice looking tin with in relief
in the lid "Commemorative Edition 1935". The flanks of the tin
are illustrated with houses in front of which Uncle Pennybags is in action. On
the bottom of the tin is a colored sticker with the text "Monopoly 1935
Commemorative Edition". Furthermore is says:
" …. This unique
edition replicates the original 1935 Parker Brothers board game from its
allustrated classic cover design to its famous game components. The original
cannon, car, purse, lantern and rocking horse tokens are reissued in a
gold-tone finish just for this edition. …". The inside of the lid
contains a personal letter of Uncle Pennybags, saying a.o. "Ah, the
charm of this edition of Monopoly reminds me of the good old days when a fine
sigar cost a nickel and a walk on the Boardwalk made me feel as though I could
swim the Atlantic Ocean."
Also the instructions are very luxurious. They mention in short the history
of the game and is ample illustrated with many versions of Monopoly sets.
Inside the tin is a blue, plastic tray for
as well the banknotes as the houses/hotels, dice, tokens and title deed cards.
As you pass Start you collect $ 200,00. The strong carton board is folded
in four. Its back is black and the play-side is blue
green.
The price amounted to US$ 36.- in December 1985.
Edition: Deluxe
Anniversary Edition, No. 0007
Publisher: Parker Brothers - 1985
Dimensions of the box: 25.7 x 51 x 6.5 cm
The game:
On the cover of this blue box are the green
houses in a row again, inclusive the tree avenue with red
car, just as on "the tin"! On the bottom a good color picture shows
the bord with all the accessories. This board (with blue
back) is that of the standard version. The blue
plastic insert is again for the banker. The upper part of it contains ribs in
which unsold property cards can be put. The houses and hotels are
of nice, glossy wood indeed, but the hotels do not have a gold print. There are
11 "gold" tokens, 1 more than with "the tin": a nice
locomotive as a "special anniversary token"! The money, property
cards as well as the cards are exactly the same as those of "the
tin".
The price amounted to US$ 18.- in December 1985.
Edition: Standard,
No. 0009
Publisher: Parker Brothers - Beverly - 1985
Dimensions of the box: 25.7 x 51 cm
The game:
This is the standard issue of the game in the year of its 50th anniversary.
The white cover of the box shows the fourth side of the board, with the
racecar on Boardwalk. The bottom of the box shows a black and white picture of
the gameboard with its accessories. Inside the box is a narrow white, plastic
tray, while the other part contains a blue,
carton insert with the well-knowned 13 FAQs. The back of the board is blue
again.
The 8 tokens are of metal. The houses and hotels are still
the same as those of the set with ref.no. 9 from 1961. The banknotes however
now have the text "Monopoly - Copyright 1935 by Parker Brothers Inc.".
Of course the Chance and Community Chest cards with their funny
illustrations with Uncle Pennybags haven't been changed.
The price of this set amounted to US$ 7.50 in December 1985.

Brothers - Salem MA - 1991
Dimensions of the box: 25.7 x 51 cm

John Tanzella was an employee at the Salem-MA factory when it closed in 1991.
His interesting story follows here under:
"As Parker Brothers was bought by Hasbro the factory in Salem-MA was closed
and moved to East Longmeadow-MA. We printed an edition that was only given to
each of the 650 employees. Special in this issue is:
So this issue was never for sale and since there are but 650 copies it will
be a very special "collector's item".

Edition:
Nostalgia Edition, No.40753
Publisher: Parker Brothers/Hasbro - 2001
Dimensions of the box: 26.3 x 26.3 x 5.3 cm
The game:
Hasbro succeeded once more to make a gain
for a collector with this nice-edition-in-a-wooden-case. As well on the push out
lid as on 1 of the surfaces of the twice folded game board and the midfield of
the board is the engine of the 1957 edition.
When the game board has been taken out the the box a "banker's tray"
remains with 6 holes to store the wooden houses
and hotels, the property deeds and tokens,
while notches in the partitions serve as holders for the remarkable small
(43x96mm) banknotes.
Because of their sepia background the property deeds (68x77mm) have a very refined
look. The small (45x76 mm) Chance- and Community
Chest cards are nicely illustrated again.
The 6 tokens (locomotive - thimble - hat - shoe - dog en racing car) are
bronzy.
The 2 small (6x6x6 mm) dice are ivory with black pips.
The Rules are also "from the past", i.a. printed on a long
narrow folded paper.
The whole edition was "Made in China".
The price of this set amounted to US$ 20.- in Januari 2005.
Edition: 1935-First Deluxe Edition (Replica), Item #1009
"Trade Mark"
Publisher: Hasbro/Winning Moves Games - 2002
Dimensions of the box: 25.7 x 51.1 cm
The game:
This edition is a re-issue of the "white boxes" as Parker Brothers
published them the first time in the fall of 1934. Parker Brothers adopted this
version for their Number 9.
The enclosed booklet Memories gives a good impression of life in the
mids 1930's as well as of the first (American) Monopoly editions. Page 6 of this
booklet shows a good picture of this set as it originally was published by
Charles Darrow himself, i.e. with larger colored property deeds and more simple
banknotes only showing a number in a small field.
Characteristic of these early editions are the spaces of the the game board not
showing a price.
The innerbox is half filled by a green
cardboard and for the other half by a long plastic "banker's tray"
with 7 slots for the banknotes.
The small Chance- and Community
Chest cards are illustrated with pictures of the early
period like they were never used since.
The 10 metal tokens are resp.: rocking-horse - iron - shoe - thimble -
canon with high wheels - racing car - waterclock - purse - hat and boat. The houses
and hotels have overhanging roofs without
chimneys and are made of dull wood.
The dice are of white plastic and so have black pips.
The price of this set amounted to US$ 30.- in Jan.2005.
Edition: 1935-First Deluxe Edition (Replica), Item #1009
Small, numbered circulation
Publisher: Hasbro/Winning Moves Games - 2002
Dimensions of the box: 25.7 x 51.1 cm
The game:
In the numbered edition of but 60 sets some additional attention
has been paid for the original Darrow design.
The bottom side of the box and black back of the game board of these sets have a sticker
saying:
"This game is (in this case:) #38 out of 60
"Limited"Editions.
It contains a "For a Good Girl" pewter thimble plus $50 and $100
bills in original colors."
It is quite pitty the banknotes not have been accurately copied for this
replica version of the original issue and even only an additional set
of banknotes of $50 and $100
in the original color were added in these 60 special boxes. Probably this
was done on purpose to prevent these new bills to be used in old editions?!
