  Edition: December 19, 2009

Map of Mexico. Before Parker Brothers/Hasbro marketed their Monopoly edition (viz. the Atlantic City version in the Spanish language) people played a great variety of inland made Turista editions. The general idea of these games is to be tourist travelling around Mexico or the world.
(It turns out monopoly-like games of inland make to be in a number of countries all over the world, mostly better known than the Parker Brothers/Hasbro edition, also available since second half of the 20th century, next to the inland versions. Except for Mexico the countries are:

* Argentina: Estanciero * Hungary: Capitaly
* Austria: Das Kaufmännische Talent DKT  * Norway: Millionær
* Brasil: * Russia: Manager
* Denmark: Matador * Spain: El Palé)

Since 1985 Parker Brothers/Hasbro also launched their Mexican edition with streets of the capital México-City.

From Go (¡Adelante!) on all properties of the International Spanish language edition are:

Turista Nacional.Edition: Turista Nacíonal
Publisher:Birján - México - after 1960
Dimensions of the box: 33.4x17x3.4 cm
The game:
Birján seems to be the leading company to manufacture Turista games since 1960. This National Edition is likely of much recent date.

As can be assumed this version concerns the "most scenic places of Mexico". The sizes of the box show the gameboard to be very small compared to the Monopoly board. The picture shows:

the 6 tokens to be aeroplanes.
the banknotes are in but 4 denominations.

Because of the presence of black and white chips the conclusion is justifiable the back side of the game board to be a checkerboard.

Turista Anahuac.Edition:  El Turista Anahuac, Ref. 106
Publisher:Birján - México - after 1960
Dimensions of the box: 33.4x17x3.4 cm
The game:
Unfortunately I don't know none of the Turista editions shown. However, I believe it is better to show at least the pictures I found on Birján's website than neglecting them.

I assume Anahuac to be a Mexican province or a city? In that case this edition can be considered to be a City Game.

In this edition the red pieces are gasolinerias (petrol stations) and the  yellow buildings Hoteles (hotels). The 6 tokens are the usual aeroplanes.

Turista Mexicano.Edition: Turista Mexicano, Ref. 121
Publisher: Birján - México - after 1960
Dimensions of the box: 52x26.3x3.5 cm
The game:
It is funny the picture shows the checkerboard at the back side of the game board, whereas the main game is Turista.
The sizes of this game board are a bit larger than of the earlier mentioned editions and correspond to those of the regular Monopoly boards.

The properties of this edition seem to be of Mexican provinces.

Turista Internacional.Edition: Turista Internacional, Ref. 262
Publisher: Birján - México - after 1960
Dimensions of the box: 52x26.3x.3.5 cm
The game:
I have no idea what the difference of this Internacional edition can be compared to the Mundial Grande issue of the same publisher.
Anyhow, it is a different design so an interesting item for every serious collector.

In case you, reader of this page, do have such a set, please send me the details so I can make it public at this place.

Original green Petropolis edition-1975.Edition: Petropolis, in green leatherette case
              ©
1975 By Petropolis Inc.
Inventor: Baron Arnaud de Rosnay -1975
Publisher: Casa Aries - México
Dimensions of the case: 52.5 x 34 x 6.5 cm
The game:
In the French site of the late inventor (he disappeared while sailing from China to Taiwan November 1984) this is said about the game: "Pétropolis is a party game like Monopoly, based on oil business. This game met a great succes in the Persian Gulf states and Asia, probably because it is based on the power of these countries opposed to the Great Powers Europe and North America."

Baron de Rosnay was a young and very wealthy Frenchman, who mixed very well with the richests of earth, while he was a worldwide respected windsurfer as well.

A collector in Alaska happens to possess number 195 of this green case edition of the game of wealth destined for the wealthy.
The game and the content of the case is precisely the same as described below except for its green color and that of the Rules' cover. Moreover the Rules booklet proves Arnaud knew the world of Oil Tycoons very well and he liked to please many of them by granting them this super luxury edition.

The leatherette instruction booklet has 9 Oil Tycoons listed with photos:
Sa Majesté le Roi KHALED BEN ABDEL AZIZ
S.A.I. Shah Mohammed Reza PAHLAVI
S.A.R. Prince FAHD BEN ABDEL AZIZ
S.A. Cheikh SABAH AL SALIM AL SABAH
S.A. Cheikh ZAYED bin SULTAN AL-NAHAYAN
S.A. Cheikh RASHID bin SAID AL MAKTOUM
S.A. Cheikh SULTAN bin MOHAMMED AL QASIMI
S.A. Cheikh KHALIFA bin HAMAD AL THANI
S.A. Cheikh ISA bin SULMAN KHALIFA
After these pictures is a photo of some oil well with two sheikhs unidentified.
The end of the Rules gives the list of games given out. It Reads:

Petropolis will be sent as a present on June 1st to the rulers of these countries:

No. 1 Sa Majesté le Roi KHALED BEN ABDEL AZIZ - Arabie Saoudite (Saudi Arabia)
No. 2 S.A.I. Shah Mohammed Reza PAHLAVI - Iran

Five of the 30 potentates who got a copy. No. 29 S.A. Cheikh Zaki YAMANI - Arabie Saoudite
No. 30 S.E. Monsieur Amir Abbas HOVEYDA - Iran

Although the whole Rules are written in English the above mentioned lists are in French. It is understandable in such a society the banknotes to bear the slogan "In oil we trust"!
The final page has a picture of Baron de Rosnay with some Arab sheikhs.

January 2007 Bruce Michael Paine (actor, vocalist, composer, producer) from Venice Beach - California told me: "I recently found a copy of Petropolis in a thrift shop in Los Angeles. It's very lavish as far as the board & pieces and has a letter that may have some bearing as to whom the owner may have been. This letter was signed by the inventor Arnoud himself on June 9th, so very short after he had sent his editions to the potentates. I also found the pictures of the sheikhs you refered to in your site. This green case has the number 0033!"

Petropolis a Mexican game-1975.Edition: Petropolis, in black leatherette case
              ©
1975 By Petropolis Inc.
Publisher: Casa Aries - México - 1975
Dimensions of the case: 52.5 x 34 x 6.5 cm
The game:
This fabulous nice black heavy case contains a very luxury version of two games: Petropolis and Backgammon together. Both games are on a side of the game board consisting of 2 parts composed of layers the outer ones being black plastic. Each one has a little flap to get it out the inner side of lid. Only the Petropolis-board has a little goldy logo of Aries and the words "Hecho en Mexico"(made in Mexico).
I will here only pay attention to Petropolis.

The aim of this game is to collect as many oilconsessions as possible and to obtain the highest possible profit from the oil producing countries. The start is called Take off/Landing (Geneva Airport) and is in the midfield of the game board. The game goes counter-clockwise. There are 27 countries and their spaces almost fill up the whole game board. Each country has 1 oilconsession to give away. From Geneva Airport on the spaces are:

Venezuela - Argentina - Ecuador - USA - Canada -Telex - Mexico - Go To International Court - Refuel/Pay $ 100,000 - Indonesia - Brunei Malaysia - Australia - China - USSR - Norway - Telex - OPEC meeting - Libya - Algeria - Nigeria - Gabon - Falconing in the desert  - International Court - Telex - Iraq -Kuwait - Egypt - Sjarjah - Dubai - Abu Dhabi - Throw Dice Again - Go To International Court - Oman -Telex - Bahrein - Qatar - Iran - Lost in the dessert and Saudi Arabia.

Subject to the number of players the consessions are to be distributed amongst them at the start of the game; the remainder must be bought.

Attributes of Petropolis-1975.The oiltycoons always move over the board by plane. Over or on TAKE OFF you receive P$ 500,000 (Petrodollars).
There are 7 molded "gold" tokens representing an airplane - tanker - dagger - gas - bar of gold - barrel and an oil storage tank. They are stored in a black vinyl pouch wilth "gold" draw-strings. The course of the game is divided into 3 stages:

  1. Stage 1: The opening, playtime 10 minutes. In this stage those oilconsessions who were not distributed amongst the players in the first instance must be bought from the Worldbank now.
  2. Stage 2: Trade and auction, playtime 5 - 10 minutes. The still unsold oilconsessions must be sold or auctioned anyhow. Next the players can trade together in order to complete color groups.
  3. Stage 3: Main match, playtime 60 minutes. The oiltycoons can now open up their properties by building drilling-rigs (instead of houses) and finally oil-rigs (instead of hotels). For the rest the game works out according to the usual rules.

The money consists of plasticized Petrodollar banknotes (62x105 mm) of the Worldbank. In the centre is a circle with a dromedary and on top of that the fine words "In oil we trust". The 7 notes are in the denominations of P$1,000 - 5,000 -10,000 - 20,000 - 50,000 - 100,000 and 1,000,000.
Instead of Chance and Community Chest cards there are 25 black Telex cards (75x123 mm) printed in gold. The instructions are like:

The radar of your private jet is out of order. You miss a turn.
You must appear in front of the Tribunal of The Hague - President of the Tribunal.
Heavy storm: important repairs on all the oil-rigs - Pay P$ 100,000 for each one.

The card "Your political influence has helped to prove your innocence. Keep this telex - President of the Tribunal." correspond consequently with "Get out of Jail free".
There are 2 dark green and 2 ambery dice with white pips. They must be thrown with the solid black felt lined shaker.
Although the texts of the Telex cards as well as of the property deeds are in English, the Rules are in Spanish only. The Rules booklet also says

"Aries - Fabrica Petropolis para todo el mundo" (Aries - makes Petropolis for the whole world).

Dimensions of the box: 25.6 x 51.0 cm
The game:
This set has been issued by Parker Brothers in all North-, Middle- and South American countries where Spanish is spoken.

The lid of this "long box" shows the last part of the 4th side and Go. On top is the red bar with Rich Uncle Pennybags in the middle O. The dice show the numbers 3 and 5. The bottom of the box is un-printed.
The back of the solid game board is blue. The word Monopoly goes in closed characters in a black frame over the board. The innerbox contains except for a small plastic insert with 7 holes for the banknotes also a filling up piece of blue cardboard on which the "13 frequently asked questions" are printed in Spanish.

The orange ribbon over the lower right corner of the lid says "El decano de los turistas", meaning "The turists dean". This is a clear reference to the inland made Turista games.

Features of this design are:

This game is essentially smaller in size than the Parker Brothers issues manufactured in the USA.
The bottom shows a black/white picture of the lid, the game board as well as all its accessories.
The dice on the lid show 3 and 5 as well as the car token, like the ref.8009 issue of the same year.
The red Monopoly bar is not in the centre of the board, but close and parallel to the 2nd side. The blue publisher's logo in a frame is almost in the center of the game board.
The spaces on the board for the white Tesoreria (Community Chest) and orange  ¡Sorpresa! (Chance) cards on the board are next and parallel to side 4. They are illustrated with funny pictures of Rich Uncle Pennybags.
The Monopoly banknotes are color-printed on white paper. The 7 denominations are in Dollars: 100 - 500 -1,000 - 2,000 - 5,000 - 10,000 and 50,000.

Turista Mundial.Edition: Turista Mundial Grande (luxury), Ref. 227
Publisher: Birján - México - ±1995
Dimensions of the box: 52x26.3x3.5 cm
The game:
This edition is the most common Turista version in the luxury version.

The direction of play is counter-clockwise and Salida (Start) represents Mexico-City. From  there on the properties are American countries, followed by African, Asian and finally European. The railroad stations are "replaced" by airlines, whereas Electric Company and Water Works became Consulado and Embajada.

Again the back side of the rather small game board is a checkers board with black and white chips.
Instead of Chance and Community Chest cards are Cartas (Letters) and Telegramas (Telegrams). The buildings of the properties are red plastic Café's (Coffee shops) and yellow Hoteles (Hotels). Again the 6 tokens are small aeroplanes.

Turista Mundial Chico.Edition: Turista Mundial Chico (small), Ref. 229
Publisher: Birján - México - ±1995
Dimensions of the box: 52x26.3x3.5 cm
The game:

It is really a pitty that I'm not able to tell more about this edition and I exhort an owner of this edition to send me all interesting details for publication on this place here.

Turista Mundial 43061.Edition: Turista Mundial, Ref. 43061
Publisher: Parker Brothers/Juguetibici - México - ±1998
Dimensions of the box: 47 x 24 x 3 cm
The game:
Another Turista Mundial however with a small red Monopoly bar as well as the Parker Brothers logo in the lower right corner of the lid. This indicates a kind of cooperation between Parker Brothers and Juguetibici.

The Salida start space shows a cream-colored arrow, pointing counter-clockwise as well as a statue and the national colors. The properties on the game board are, counter-clockwise divided over 4 continents, resp. showing the flags of the countries:

  1. America: Argentine - Brasil - Colombia - Puerto Rico - United States - Canada
  2. Africa: Marocco - Saudi Arabia - Egypt - Ethiopia - Cameroon - South Africa
  3. Asia: South Korea - Israel  - Soviet Union - China - India - Japan
  4. Europe: Sweden - Germany - Italy - Spain  - France - England

The sizes of the game board are 45.5 x 45.5 cm. It's midfield shows the above mentioned countries on the world map in the same colors. Instead of stations there are 4 (not exsisting) airlines called American Airline - African Airline - Asian Airline and European Airline. The 3 corners after Salida moving counter-clockwise are: Migración/Vaya a la O.N.U. - Loteria Internaciónal - O.N.O./United Nations

The pawns shown on the flags on the lid do not exactly correspond to those belonging to the game. These are aggravation pawns. The Rules are printed on the inside of the lid. Along with the rules - there is also a chart of statistical information about the continents and many of the countries in around the globe. The information includes land mass in km², population, languages, capitals, and currency. The game was obviously made before 2002 because the European currencies are the old ones.
The game comes with white inserts completely covering the playing equipment. When turned upside down insert is folded into two compartments with perforations all along the common edge of the compartments. It is apparently intended to use as an inner box to hold the playing equipment. It can also be used as a banker's tray. However it only has the two big compartments (no money compartments).
The cards are called Carta and Telegrama.
There are but 5 denominations of Turista money (however with the Monopoly design, i.e. with the illustrations of a locomotive and house) consisting of one sided color-printed white paper . They are: 10.000 - 20.000 - 50.000 - 100.000 and 500.000.
The houses are of yellow plastic, the hotels are red. Both have a chimney.
Both dice are white with black pips.

This edition in exactly the same presentation is also manufactured and marketed in Columbia.

Parker Brothers" (Property trading game, of Parker Brothers)
Publisher: Parker Brothers/Hasbro Inc. - Pawtucket - 1999
Dimensions of the box: 26.9 x 40.2 cm
The game:
The lid of this new "standard box" (shorter than the 1985 issue) also shows the last part of the 4th side and Go. On top is the red bar with Rich Uncle Pennybags in the middle O. The dice now show the numbers 3 and 6. but the race car is still on the Paseo Tablado.
The bottom of the box is still un-printed, unlike the similar European editions showing a "laughing family" around a table playing Monopoly.

In this new box is one plastic tray with 7 slots for the banknotes, 10 slots for the property deeds and 4 trays for the other equipment. The board is folded in four.  The word Monopoly is in a black frame diagonal the board. On the game board are the nice looking Casualidadand Arca Comunal cards of this set. It are white cards on which the text in a frame is printed in red. The back of the Arca Comunal cards is blue with the treasure chest in a yellow field; that of the Casualidad cards is red with a ? in a yellow field.
The property cards don't have rounded corners and consequently look like slightly largers (dim.: 56 x 87 mm). The back of this white cards is printed in red.
The banknotes are of the new model, i.e. with a black ribbon with in there "Monopoly with Uncle Pennybags" in the upper part of the circle.
The 10 tokens are made of pewter (without a mention "made in China" on the plastic bag). The green plastic houses do have a chimney, the red hotels don't. Both the dice are white.

First Ecuadorian Hasbro edition, 2008.Edition: Monopoly Ecuador, ref.nrs. LA01730 (LA01753 / 2000001743126)
Juego de Compraventa de Inmuebles, de Parker Brothers ®

              Edición de Colección
Publisher:Hasbro/Parker - 2008
Dimensions of the box: 40.2 x 26.7x 6.7 cm                                 Diese Version auf deutsch: www.monopoly-wiki.de
The game:
This collector's item is from the collection of Steve Amato - N.Y.

As it can be read from the bottom of this edition this typical Ecuadorian version is also distributed in Chile and Mexico.

While in many countries the black, or blue, Parker logo tends to disappear these days from the Hasbro editions this first Monopoly edition is yet introduced in this country showing the American blue Parker logo on the colorfull lid. This also means the game has been produced in America. It almost has the sizes of the standard white boxes of the Parker/Hasbro editions from around the year 2000 in Europe and elsewhere, only 1.5 cm higher. However, its content is that of the standard square green boxes with the third die as it is announced by the yellow sticker on the bottom of the box saying "Juega rápido con el Dado Veloz" (Play faster with the Lucky die). The bottom of the box only shows a large picture of the board with Mr. Monopoly on top and the "introduction story" in a green column. There is no reference to the new interactive ways of playing Monopoly by EA.

The properties are from Salida (Go) onwards:

Península De Santa Elena
- Arca Comunal (Community Chest) - Machala - Impuestos Sobre La Renta (Income Tax) - Aeropuerto Cuenca - Santo Domingo - Casualidad (Chance) - Portoviejo - Manta - En la cárcel/De visit nada más - Plaza de la Independencia - Empresa Electrica - Parque la Carolina -Palacio de Carondelet - Aeropuerto Quito - Panecillo - Arca Comunal - Iglesia DeGuapulo - Parque Itchimbía - Parada Libre - Parque de las Iguanas - Casualidad - Parque Histórico Guayaquil - Malecon 2000 - Aeropuerto Guayaquil - Las Penas - Municipio de Guayaquil - Agua Potable (Represa Paute) - Parque CentenarioVáyase a la cárcel! - Cuenca - Ruinas de Inga-Pirca - Arca Comunal - El Chimborazo - Aeropuerto Manta -Casualidad - Islas Galápagos - Impuestos de Lujo (Luxury Tax) and Mitad del Mundo.

The most striking is the 3rd die, the red socalled Lucky die, making the play faster. However, the game can still be played the "old-fashioned" way, without this additional die.
Two standard white dice and one Lucky die. This die shows the figures 1 - 2 and 3, a bus and 2x Mr. Monopoly. The effect of this Lucky die, together with both white dice is:

1, 2 or 3: Add up this with your throw of the white dice.
Bus: You may choose if you want to move on the basis of one or both white dice.
Mr.Monopoly: Proceed the number of pips of the white dice and carry out what has to be done on that space. Further you go to the next unsold property and buy it or let it be auctioned. If there is no more unsold ground you proceed to the next property of an other player and pay the rent.
At double throw of the white dice the Luck die does not count.
When you throw 3 times one, two or three in 1 throw you may go to a space to choice.
If you are sent to the prison, the Lucky die no longer participates.

Wrong property deed shown in the Rules booklet.Other features of this possible prospective "standard edition" are:

In the white strip of the lid is stated it here concerns a Parker invention of a Family game for players over
8 years
old and a number of players from 2 to 8.

All 4 rims of the lid show the new rectangular Monopoly red bar.

The innerbox contains a greenish cardboard filling piece showing the red Monopoly bar and Ecuador
banner as well as a black plastic insert with 7 slots for the banknotes.

The property deeds have the sizes of the European ones: 56x88 mm, while the picture in the Rules booklet
suggest they have the sizes of the American cards: 67x77 mm.
The fact that this wrong card is shown in the Rules booklet may be an indication there must have been an earlier
Ecuadorian Parker Monopoly
? By the way: the word Mudo on the small card is wrong, it ought to be Mundo.

The Casualidad and Arca Comunal cards are illustrated with various apparitions of Mr. Monopoly with
his cane. The instructions on these cards are still the same as over the past 74 years.

The Banknotes are printed in black on colored paper in the denominations: 1 (white) - 5 - 10 - 20 - 50
100
and 500 $ (= US $). The notes are not stacked in order in the bundle, the 20$ and 50$ have been swapped.

The 8 metal tokens are the usual ones, viz.:  car - wheelbarrow - dog - iron - hat - boat - shoe and thimble.

The hollow plastic houses and hotels are the American ones and have a chimney and an overhanging roof.

The Rules are in a booklet of 12 pages. There is a number on the back. It is 767LA0173000.

The double folded game board lies unfixed on both inserts of the innerbox and so can move freely.

The game is made in the U.S.
