Edition: Magnetic Pocket Edition, Ref. # 44023
(1)
Publisher: Waddingtons/Tonka - 1991
Dimensions of the portfolio: 1.5 x 10.5 x 18 cm
The game:
This travel edition has about the shape of a notebook. The red
portfolio is packed in a cover that with a cut-out window. When the portfolio is
put back in its cover the gold-printed word Monopoly appears. The back of the
cover shows a picture of the board with all the attributes. The
attributes are stored in a little drawable tray that have to be put somewhere by
playing the game on a journey.
The flat tokens, houses and hotels do stick on the surface of the
board, but there are no facilities for the small and clumsy money, Chance-
and Community Chest cards as well as the property cards, so
that these things have to be hand held?
Although not very practical this set ought to be in each collection.
Edition: Junior standard - English, ref. 44024
Publisher: Waddingtons/Tonka - 1991
Dimensions of the box: 26.0 x 50.3 cm
The game:
By taking this box at hand 2 things attract attention:
 |
The edges of the lid are (4 mm) higher than those of
the inner box. Mistake in production? |
 |
With the Waddingtons issues is no talk
of "Monopoly
in a red bar" but of "Monopoly in a white
bar". |
Also in this Monopoly-for-kids game the aim is to collect as much money as
possible. At the moment one of the players runs out of money the other players
must count up their money to see who has won the game.
The back of the board is red, like
the tray in the box. The game board in folded vertically. On the bottom of the
box is a color picture of the board and all attributes. The money
consists of one side printed notes of 1 to 5 with Uncle Pennybags in various
situations the centrefield.
Four children can play at the same time, because there are 4 cars,
respectively yellow, red,
blue and green.
The ticket booths are to be distributed amongst the players with the same
color of car.
The game is called A thrill-filled day at the Amusement Park and will be
over in about 20 to 30 minutes. Uncle Pennybags brings you to the Roller
Coaster, Magic Show, Water Chute, the Video Arcade and more. In the coarse of
the game ticket booths can be bought to place on an Amusement so that it
becomes your property. If you also own the other Amusement of the same color, a
visitor has to pay double the amount shown on the space. There are 6 Chance
spaces where cards can be drawn with instructions like
 |
"Go to the Water
Chute" and |
 |
"Pay 3.- to take the tram to the cafe". |
The
dimensions of these tickets are: 57 x 88 mm, so slightly larger than those of
the Parker sets. They also are less colorfull.
The game was manufactured in Great Britain.
The price amounted to € 27,26 in October 1991.
Edition: Magnetic Pocket Edition, Ref. # 44023 (2)
Publisher: Waddingtons/Tonka - 1993
Dimensions of the portfolio: 1.5 x 10.5 x 18 cm
The game:
This travel edition in a notebook format has been published already in 1991.
I do not know what the differences are.
Edition: Dice
Game, ref. 44029
Publisher: Waddingtons/Tonka - 1993
Dimensions of the box: 11 x 15 x 2.5 cm
The game:
In a green cover fits the black travel case.
The gameboard is in the bottom part of the case and consists of squares
in the colors of the streets, 4 spaces with an engine and for the rest 1 for
Electric Company and 1 for Water Works. Further there are 10 dice, a score pad
and a pencil.
On the dice are except the numbers 50 - 100 - 150 - 200 - 250 - 300 - 400 and
500 also other elements of the game including the "Go To Jail"
policeman.
The object of the game is to be first to reach the point score decided
beforehand.
On your turn, throw all the dice as many times as you wish to get as many "streets"
of the same color and so get the highest score you can. To that end a dice have
to be placed on an appropriate space after each throw. If you get 3 policemen (one
throw or a number of throws during one turn), your turn ends and you lose all
the points for that turn. On each turn the points have to be added up for all
the matches you have made. The points do not correspond to the numbers on the
dice, but they are only subject to the color of the space they are placed on.
Only in case you end your turn before you make even one match, you'll get the
sum total shown on the dice on any one unfinished property as your score for
that turn.
This game differs slightly from for example the Dutch version.
A nice and handy version for a journey.
Manufactured in the United Kingdom.
Edition: Travel Monopoly, Ref. 44651
Publisher: Waddingtons/Tonka - 1994
Dimensions of the box: 24.5 x 24.5 cm
The game:
This is the most clumsy version of a travel edition I've ever met. If you do it the
right way everything is okay, but in case you by accident open the four parts case on the
wrong way all equipment fall on the floor.
You ought to put the set into use as follows:
 |
Keep the red box with the
Monopoly
sticker upwards. |
 |
Pull out one of the two drawers from aside. |
 |
Pull out the "bottom" (playing area) and position it on top
of
the case. |
 |
Finally pull out the other drawer with equipment and you're
ready to play. |
The 6 tokens, 32 houses
and 16 hotels are flat and will
be kept on the board by a snap-on system. More than 1 token or house may rest on
the same space by stacking them on top of each other.
Of course the cards and banknotes are very small and therefore not
very handy in use.
As far as known, this version has been made by Waddingtons
only and it might had to compete with the "red
case, made in China"? (see further on).
Edition: Travel
Junior Monopoly, Ref. 44653
Publisher: Waddingtons/Tonka - 1994
Dimensions of the box: 24.5 x 24.5 cm
The game:
This game for children is as clumsy as the Travel Edition for adults.
The blue box consists again of 4 elements
that have to carefully be disassembled.
For the rest the game is similar to the earlier described Junior
Edition. So
it can be played by 4 children at the maximum. They go to the fun fair where
they can buy stalls. The amounts they play with are also considerably lower than
in the adults game. The names of the 4 stations are Yellow
Line, Green Line, Blue
line and Red Line, so the colors of the 4
players.
Here again the cards and banknotes are (inevitably) very small and
therefore not to suitable for children.
Edition: Junior
standard - English, ref. 14540
Publisher: Parker Bros./Hasbro - 1996
Dimensions of the box: 26.8 x 26.8 cm
The game:
The differences between this version and those of the preceeding
years are:
 |
A totally new square box. |
 |
A new illustration on the cover: Children in a roller
coaster car with 2
jumping dolphins in the background. |
 |
The color picture on the bottom of the box shows a
scene again of 2
(different) girls and a boy.
The money they use is indeed that of the 1991 game. |
 |
Now the game board is oblong: 25 x 50.5 cm. |
 |
The back of the board is red
like the plastic tray in the
inner box. |
Edition: Travel
Game, ref. 14248/102
Publisher: Waddingtons/Tonka/Hasbro Inc. -
1997
Dimensions of the case: 5 x 12 x 18 cm
The game:
Three years later than in most European countries Waddingtons also
introduces the "red case, made in
China". The only advantage of this late issue is the fact that the banknotes
are of the "1996 model", i.e. without any mention of copyright, while
in the upper part of the circle "Monopoly with Uncle Pennybags" is
printed in a black bar. (On the cardboard however still the old banknotes are
shown.)
This variant is a well-reflected and practical travelling companion indeed.
The tokens can be fixed on each space but not more than just one. That
means that the next player landing on the same street has to move one
step ahead. Only on the corners is sufficient space for 4 players to stay.
There are also 4 holes per street for the houses and
hotels.
There are no Chance nor Community Chest cards. Instead three dice
have to be thrown and the instruction mentioned in the table with the
corresponding number to be carried out. Instead of a free ticket to leave Jail
you get one of the 6 keys.
The price of this set amounted to £ 8.50 (€12.25) in December 1998.
Edition:
Monopoly - Milk Chocolate Game Edition
Publisher: Bonbon Buddies - UK/Hasbro Inc. -1998/99
Dimensions of the box: 15 x 30 x 4.5 cm
The game:
This is an interesting and edible variant of Monopoly, merely sold in the
period before X-mas and manufactured by the English firm:
"Bonbon Buddies"
Oakwood Close, Penyfan Ind. Estate
CRUMLIN - Gwent NP11 3HY
This edition can definately not been played with because on the small
board of 30 x 30 cm are but 4 x 2 streets of London, who are
on the wrong sides for that matter, namely:
red: Trafalgar Square and Fleet Street
yellow: Leicester Square and Piccadilly
green: Regent Street and Bond Street
dark blue: Park Lane and Mayfair.
Of the stations are but Fenchurch Street Station and Marylebone
Station. There are also the Electric Company and Water Works. Unfortunately the
5 banknotes (dim. 9 x 4 cm), 10 Chance-
and 10 Community Chest cards cannot been eaten.
There are 6 (flat) chocolate tokens as well as 16 houses and 8
hotels as edible sweets.
After you've built 2 houses on your property you are allowed to build
already such a delicious hotel on.
This English edition is also sold in Holland and Australia, whereas the
French version with streets from Paris is sold in France and Belgium.
The price of this set amounted to £ 5.- in December 1999.
Edition:
Junior Edible Candy Game
Publisher: Bonbon Buddies - UK/Hasbro Inc. - 1999
Dimensions of the box: 15 x 30 x 4.5 cm
The game:
Like the chocolate edition this almost unplayable candy-game is also only sold
in the period before X-mas.
"Almost unplayable", because on the bottom of the box are the
detailed Rules for this drastically symplified edition. However, although all
elements of the game are there, the point is the eatable items like the 4
tokens, consisting of round candy discs in the colors
ligt yellow,
light pink, light
blue and light green as well as
the 4x5 Ticket Booths in the same colors and of the same material.
However, the banknotes and the tiny Chance cards are of ordinary
paper. All attributes are in an insert of red
plastic. Moreover, the candy is covered by a moulded sheet of transparent
plastic.
The moment players start to nibble the set is worthless.
The price of this edition amounted to € 8.15 November 2000.
Edition: Junior
standard - English, ref. 00441/102
Publisher: Parker/Hasbro B.V. - 2001
Dimensions of the box: 26.8 x 26.8 cm
The game:
Like with the the editions for adults the Junior sets from now on also get the
American ref. numbers. So in this case number 441, followed by the country
number.
Except for the new presentation on the lid the game remained unchanged.
