BRER FOX an' BRER RABBIT
Publisher: Newbie Game Company - Annan - Scotland
Patent 1913 - London - England -1913
Dimensions of the box: 23 x 23 x 1.9 cm
of the unfolded board: 43 x 43 cm
The game:
This copy of a very early commercialised UK game is from the collection of Phil
Orbanes - USA.
This game is based on the Landlord's
Game, a game invented as early as in 1903 by the American lady Lizzie
Magie, owner of the Economic Game Comp. - N.Y.. Lizzie was a follower
of Henry George. (Georgism, is a philosophy and economic theory that follows from the belief that although everyone owns what they create; land, and everything else supplied by nature, belongs equally to all humanity.)
The "fox" has Lloyd George's head on the cover of the box. He was the Prime Minister of England in 1913. His economic policies encouraged his opponents to publish
"Brer Fox an' Brer Rabbit" to demonstrate the "evils" of his policies.
The game was introduced by the next article in the Scottish magazine
"Land Values", May
1913, which specialized in political efforts to reform the taxation of
land:
" "The Landlord's Game"
This most interesting and amusing game has just been published by the Newbie
Liberal Committee, and a more enjoyable way of passing these long, dark evenings
than by playing the "Landlords' Game has yet to be thought of.
The board is marked off in spaces, each representing a property - it may be an
estate, a house, a fishery, or a grouse moor (no mercy is shown to the poor
player found trespassing there) - and on each space is printed the rent and sale
price of the property. Cards, corresponding to the spaces, are dealt round,
and the players (there may be two, three or four) providing themselves with
counters representing £2,000, buy up as much property as they can afford. This
purchase money goes into the "Public Treasury". Beginning at the
"Mother Earth", and throwing the dice in turn, the players move their
pawns round the board according to their throws, paying the rent of the spaces
on which they land to the respective owners of the properties. Each time
"Mother Earth" is passed the player is supposed to have performed a
certain amount of labour, and receives £100 wages, the winner being he, who
after passing "Mother Earth" five times, has amassed most wealth in
property and money.
Many are the difficulties to be overcome in the journey round the board. A
player may speculate and lose heavily, he may become bankrupt and have to go to
the "Poorhouse" while his property is put up for auction for the
others to bid for, or he may be caught poaching on "The Solway
Fisheries" or "Lord Tomnoddy's Grouse Moor" and be sent to
"Jail", from which he can only come out on payment of a heavy fine.
Worse still, he may get into "Dottyville Lunatic Asylum", out of which, as
may well believed, it is difficult indeed to escape.
Or a player may land on a space marked "Chance", in which case he
draws a card from the pack marked "chance". His "chance" may
be a "Week-end with Lord Tomnoddy" and the card instructs him to
"pay £3 in tips to Flunkies to the owner of "Lord Tomnoddy's Grouse
Moor", or it may be "Blackmail from Ratepayers for Water
Monopoly", and he receives £50 from the Public Treasury.
Again a player may draw a Luxury card which counts £100 at the end of the game.
Think of drawing the luxury of "A £1,000 dinner with the Duke of
Westminster"!
There are many other adventures awaiting those who purchase the game, and we can
promise to those that there will not be a dull night for the rest of the winter.
"The Landlords' Game" is published at the nominal price one
shilling, and all land taxers should make a point of obtaining the game.
Application should be sent to Miss Clarke, Newbie, Annan. "
(Annan appeared to be a small Scottish town, close to the English
frontier and situated along the north side of the Solway Firth bay.)
The gameboard is not mounted. It was simply printed on heavy paper and folded into quarters.
From Mother Earth onwards all 23 numbered spaces (without any color bar) on the green
game board are:
(1) Three Acre Cow Farm - (2) Market Garden - (3) Tareham Steam Laundry - (4)
Solway Fisheries - (5) Imperial Taxes - (6) Gaol/Luxury - (7) Imperial
Taxes - (8) The Midland Railway - (9) Dottyville Lunatic Asylum - (10)
Undeveloped Coalfield - (11) The Zoo - (12) Pourhouse/Chance - (13)
Daily Mail Offices - (14) Elephant and Castle Public House -(15) Lord Tonmoddy's
Grouse Moor - (16) The British Museum - (17) The House of Lords - (18) Lord
Broadacres' Estate - (19) Undeveloped City Site - (20) Selfridge's Store -
(21) Grey Goose Common - (22) Westminster Abby and (23) The Bank of England.
This game can be played at 3 levels of difficulty:
1. Buying the land.
Having received their starting amount of £3000
players can buy Site cards (sort of property deeds)
for which they have to pay Capital land value (sale
price of the land) into the
Bank and place a Sold ticket, of the same color as of his token, on his site.
The players start moving over the bord from Mother Earth and according to the total number
on both dice or
on just one, at choice.
Landing on a site the player have to pay Annual land value (rent)
to the owner of the site. Unbought sites are rent-free.
* On landing on Solway Fisheries or Lord
Tonmoddy's Grouse Moor one must go to Gaol (jail), unless he can strike a private
bargain with the owner to be let off.
* On Dottyville Lunatic Asylum one must wait
there in accordance with instructions.
* On Lord Broadacres'Estate one must go to Gaol
without alternative.
* On Imperial Taxes one must pay Breakfast-table
Duties or Tobacco Duties into the Public Treasury.
* On a Luxury or Chance site one must
draw a Luxury or Chance card and follow the instructions.
If a player should be unable to pay his debts he
must go to the Poorhouse until his debts are paid.
A player receives his Wages each time he
passes Mother Earth. After making 3 complete rounds he is entitled to an Old Age Pension every
time he passes Mother Earth.
At the beginning of the game Wages are £200 and
Old Age Pensions £30, but when all the Sites are bought up, Wages are halved, and Rents and Taxes
are doubled.
2. Improving the land.
In this part of the game each player receives a
further £3000 from the Bank. The Improvement cards are exposed on the table and players begin to improve
their land
taking into account that:
* a player (not necessarily
the owner of the site) must pay the Capital to the Bank.
* Undeveloped Sites cannot be improved in
this level.
* a player landing on an improved site must
pay Annual land value (rent) to the owner, Interest (rent of
improvement) to the owner of the improvement and Rates (taxes)
to
the Public Treasury.
Whenever a player's property is all
improved his Wages are raised to £300, but again, when all sites are bought up, Wages are halved, and Rents, Taxes and Rates
are doubled.
3. Unrating Improvements and Taxing Land Values.
In this part of the game Industry and Enterprise
are relieved of all Rates and Taxes, and a new standard of rating is put into operation: Land values.
It will now pay the
players to improve their properties as fast as possible.
* The owner of Solway Fisheries now have to pay
the Annual land value (rent) of £20 to the Public Treasury. He now finds it no longer
to hold it, so he is glad to sell it to
the Government at half its value and the Gaol penalty is thereafter
annulled.
* The same for Lord Tonmoddy's Grouse Moor.
Since Lord Tomnoddy is no longer able to send trespassers to Gaol, or levy
blackmail from poachers, moreover having,
like other landlords, to pay Land Values Tax, he emigrates
to Canada, leaving his steward to collect the rents and pay them to the Public Treasury.
* Lord Broadacres'Estate has now been turned
into a Public Park and the Gaol Penalty is annulled.
* Undeveloped Sites are now assessed at full
value for Land Value Tax, and their owners have now an interest in improving them to the
utmost.
* Breakfast-table Duties or Tobacco Duties
are aboloshed, being no longer necessary for revenue.
Any player becoming bankrupt need no longer go to the Poorhouse, as he
can betake himself to the nearest Natural Opportunity Space, where land
is free and where he can earn wages to pay his debts. At his next throw he
receives £100 wages, and if he can then pay his debts, moves on. If he is still
unable to pay all his debts he must remain on the Free Land till he has
accumulated sufficient cash to clear himself. He receives £100 wages at each
throw.
Wages rise to £500 on passing Mother Earth, whilst Poverty and Unemployment
disappear for ever.

The New Game
Totopoly - small green
box
with separate game board
"By the manufacturers of 'Monopoly' "
Publisher: John Waddington Ltd. - London and Leeds - 1938
Dimensions of the box:: 37.5 x 17.5 x 4 cm
The game:
This edition is from the collection of David Miller - UK.
David knows to tell that this first edition was released by Waddingtons in 1938.
The inventors were a Walter Lee and Roy Palmer from
Leeds. The game was registered under the UK patent number 505365. So
there is no relation with the American games inventor and manufacturer Parker Brothers.
However, in the same era Parker Brothers introduced Monopoly to their recently
acquired European business contact John Waddinton (see: "The
Game Makers, the story of Parker Brothers", by Philip E. Orbanes, page 99).
It is obvious that Mr. Waddington did the same as the Parker Brothers, viz. lifting
along with the tremendous succes of Monopoly to get a better turnover!
The idea of the game is that racehorses are leased by players, and trained by
them for the race. Players have the opportunity of leasing horses at first
option, that is through the deal, and later the chance arises to lease
additional ones in the auction sale. In the same way players will acquire
temporary ownership of a racing stable, veterinary surgeon's practice or forage
merchant, etc.
When all the horses and businesses have been sold, the training of the horses then commences. Players may have to get trainers'and vet.'s reports
on the progress of their horses, and it will be found when training has finished
that some horses have made more progress than others by acquiring advantage
cards, and have therefore more chance of winning the race.
Whilst it is possible by careful play in the race for any of the horses
to win, the black (Dark Warrior - Flamenco - Dorigen)
ones have more change than the red (Marmaduke
Jinks - Leonidas II - Overcoat)
ones, the reds more chance than the yellow
(PLay
On - Priory
Park - Knight
Error) ones, and the blues
(King of Clubs - Jerome
Fandor - Elton) least
chance of all, but it may be found that during training a blue
or yellow
horse has improved so much that it has an equal chance with the blacks
and reds. Naturally, the horses with the
most chance in the first place and those that improve well in training, will be "backed"
the most on the Tote, but, as in real racing, an outsider can always give
players a big surprise.
The winner can either be the one with the most money at the end of the
race, or the one with the winning horse. This should be decided at the beginning
of the race!
For all editions applies there are:
 | a Sale and Training ring on one side of the game
board and a Racecourse on the other. The training have to be
played with 2 dice, the racing with but 1. |
 | 2 stables:Stevedon, where the light weights

"Outwit Your Rivals in The World Of High Stakes And Hotel Empires"
Publisher: Parker Bros./Kenner Parker - ±1985
Dimensions of the box: 26 x 50.6 cm
The game:
This edition is from the collection of David Miller - UK.
This Uk edition considerably differs from those of other European issues in that
it doesn't bear the name of the most expensive street of the Monopoly game:
Mayfair. I have no idea what the reason for this can be, but since it is a game
of getting properties and increasing your fortune like in Monopoly, this game, in 1985 issued by Parker Bros.,
has to be mentioned in this Lexicon.
The idea however differs importantly from Monopoly: The board is
oblong: 22.5 x 89 cm and contains 4 colored groups of 5 spaces each, of which
the maximum of 4 players have to collect the properties cards.
The 4 tokens
are respectively a Pram, Roller
skate, Sail boat and a Moped. There
are 3 dice, one of them being white and provided with an F
(Fortune), W
(Wild)
and one of the colors of each of the 4 spaces on the other 4 sides.
Furthermore
are 80 hotel units, 20 per color of the tokens. Dependent on the number
of players each player gets 14 to 20 hotels. He is to build these, subject to
the number of pips thrown, on spaces at choice. The Fortune cards will help. The token is always put on the space
relating to the total
of the property cards the player possesses. Player can no longer take
part when he has no more hotels. Winner is of course the one who finally has
most properties.
The cover shows a "years twenties"-like illustration of a lane with a
London double-decked bus. The white bottom of the box shows the long
game board in black and white.
The set was manufactured by Waddingtons
- London and Leeds.
Identical games are Advance to Boardwalk (USA), Bau auf
der Schossallee
(D), Parco della Vittoria (I), La Calle Mayor (E) and Ga verder naar
Kalverstraat (NL).
Edition:
European Edition - English
Publisher: Parker/Tonka/Waddingtons - 1991
Dimensions of the box: 27 x 27 x 8.4 cm
The game:
This edition is owned by David Miller - UK.
Great Britain is one of the 12 countries of
the European Community in this era. The token representing this
country is of course the Tower
of London.
The other 11 tokens are:
Blarney Castle (Ireland), Brandenburger Tor (Germany), Abby of Clervaux
(Luxemburg), Atomium (Belgium), Parthenon
(Greece), Eiffeltower (France),
Grundvig Church (Denmark), Leaning Tower of Pisa (Italy), Torre de Belem
(Portugal), La Sagrada Familia (Spain) and of course a windmill for The
Netherlands.
The properties are well-known streets in the joining countries, viz.:
 |
Denmark: Strandvejan - Slotsgade |
 |
Belgium: Louizalaan - Beenhouwersstraat - Grote Markt |
 |
The Netherlands: Coolsingel - Lange Poten - Kalverstraat |
 |
Spain: Paseo de la Castellana - Gran Vía -Las Ramblas |
 |
Great Britain: Oxford St. - Piccadilly - Park Lane |
 |
Italy: Via Veneto - Via Condotti - Via Monte-Napoleone |
 |
France: Avenue Foch - Avenue des Champs-Elysées - Rue de la Paix |
 |
Germany: Königsallee - Kurfürstendamm |
The 4 stations are replaced by airports of the countries:
Luxemburg - Portugal - Greece and Ireland.
In the period this game was launched on the market it was believed that the European
currency would become ECU. That is why there are 7 banknotes
with this game, all having the same illustration, in the denominations: 10
- 50 - 100
- 200 - 500
- 1000 en 5000
ECU. The back shows ECU in a black circle with 12 stars. Because "investments
are internationally done a large amount of money is necessary" and that is
why there is twice as much money with this issue. The banker's tray of this game
is a black plastic insert with 13 holes.
The backside of as well the Chance- as the Community Chest cards
is blue. In the stars circle is a ? with
Chance and with the Community Chest cards …. a Belgian ECU coin. The houses and
hotels
are made of glossy wood and do have a roof edge.
The dice are blue
and their pips are again stars of course.
This set was made in "Waterford, Republic of Ireland".
Edition:
Anti-Monopoly, Ref. 5906
Publisher: TALICOR, Inc. -
1996
Dimensions of the box: 23.2 x 45.6 cm
The game:
Anti-Monopoly is an upgraded version of the Atlantic City Quaker game named
monopoly. Professor Ralph Anspach invented the game and Professor Irvin
Hentzel did the mathematics.
In Anti-Monopoly, players play either by monopoly or competition rules fixed
at the beginning of the game. Competitors charge fair rents, build as
soon as they own a property, put 5 houses on their properties and occasionally
go to Price War. Monopolists extort monopoly-high rents from their
poor tenants, build only after they have monopolized a colour grouping, restrict
supply by putting only 4 houses on their properties and occasionally
go to Prison.
The good guys are the small entrepreneurs and the bad guys are the
monopolists. Since players do not play by the same rules, fairness is achieved
by a patented technique of equalizing the win probabilities, a technique made
possible only by the computer age.
Anti-Monopoly requires more sophistication and strategic thinking than
Monopoly because competitors make more money than monopolists in the beginning
of the game but monopolists can catch up later, especially if competitors don't
watch their money. This eliminates a weakness in the other game where one often
knows in the beginning who is going to win, even though the game can drag on for
a long time. The conflict between competitors and monopolists adds excitement to
the game.
The board contains the streets of 8 American cities, viz.: New Orleans,
Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston, Washington, San Francisco and New
York. The colors of the streets are respectively: light
green, brown, light
purple, dark green,
blue, dark
purple, light braun
and redish braun.
Instead of stations here are, very neutral: U.S.Railroad, U.S.Bus Company,
U.S.Air Line and U.S. Trucking Company. When you mortgage a property you
have to turn over the title deed in exchange for the appropriate (half as big)
mortgage note.
The banknotes are very poor.
Instead of
Chance and Community Chest cards there are 25 Competotor and 25 Monopolist
cards. This are white cards with nice illustrations and texts (see for examples:
http://www.antimonopoly.com) . There
are 6 tokens, 3 Large Pawns and 3 Small ones. There are 35 houses
and 15 Apartments.
Really a very special game.
Edition: Batman & Robin - Collector's Edition
Publisher: USAOPOLY,
Inc. - 1997
Dimensions of the box: 25.4 x 50.8 cm
The game:
This game is made after the film of Batman and Robin intervening
in the battle
for supremacy in Gotham City.
The predominant colors of the box as well as of the game board
are black and red. Besides the
symbols of Batman and Robin, the cover also shows pictures of the leading
persons. At the bottom of the box is a nice picture of the game board with the
attributes. The back side of the board is black.
The inside of the box contains a cardboard insert, but instead of "the
FAQ's" it shows once more the pictures of the leading persons. The
remaining space is filled by a tray of soft, white plastic.
The 8 tokens are very special and bear a stamp of DC Comics in their feet.
Besides the symbols of Batman and Robin, a leaf and a big diamond there are 4
vehicles among which Batmobile and Freezemobile. The "streets"are
of course locales from the spectacular feature film, like: Biker
Alley, Pamela Isley's Lab, Holographic Gym,
Mr.Freeze's Cell, Wayne
Manor Garage, Blossom St. Station and
Batcave.
The 32 houses are grey whereas
the 12 red hotels
are mansions.
The money consists of banknotes of "The City of Gotham" and the
currency is Simoleon.
The Chance and Community Chest cards are mentioned as such in the
instructions, but in the game they are marked by the symbols of Batman and Robin.
Their texts and illustrations relate of course to the story, such as:
 |
Batskiff

Edition:
Star Wars - Collector's Edition, Ref. 40786/
Publisher: Waddingtons/Hasbro Inc. - 1997
Dimensions of the board: 26.8 x 40.3 x 5.3 cm
The game:
This version of Star Wars has the same ref. number as the American one, but
because this one comes from the Irish works it has the new standard length and
width dimensions of all Hasbro games, as a result of which it is almost 11 cm
shorter. The Rules are not luxurious like with the Limited
Edition of Parker Brothers.
Although the game is of course the same there are a number of great
diffences in execution between the American and this English version. So the
colors of the Dagobah and Hoth spaces are resp. dark
purple and light blue on the
American board while they are mahogany and dark
blue on the English one. The 8 pewter tokens come from the
same manufacturer which appears from stamp in the base "©1996 LFL".
Each token is a well-known character from Star Wars. The Rebel Alliance
consists of Luke Skywalker, Princes Leia, Han Solo, Chewbacca and R2-D2. The
fighters for the Galactic Empire are Darth Vader, Boba Fett and the
Stormtrooper. The vehicles used by the Rebels are light
grey X-Wing Fighters and Corellian Freighters and those of
the Imperials are the dark grey
Tie Fighters and Star Destroyers.

Edition:
WC France 98
Edition, Ref. 19618/
Publisher: Waddingtons/ Hasbro - 1997
Dimensions: 40 x 27 x 6.5 cm
The game:
Although this box is, like the one of other European countries, in the colors dark
blue, silver and of course red,
this game is published under the flag of Waddingtons
instead of Parker Brothers (see the picture of a part of the bottom of the box).
So this game is also manufactured in Ireland.
The game board spaces can hardly be found on the cover, but so a couple of
football players, eachone in an energic posture but not in a match position. The
lid also has a hologram with the France 98
logo. On the bottom of the box is a clear picture of the game board and
its attributes. Besides it shows the innerbox being a football ground. It is remarkable that at the shown
bank notes on
this issue denomination 1 is on top whereas the 100 is in f.e. the Dutch set. It
is to be expected that the green street of England is on top of the stack under the transparant picture of the
8 metal
tokens.
It also strikes the Chance and Community Chest cards to be replaced by Away
and Home cards, with of course matching texts like "Transfer to
Brasil" and "You have missed a penalty. Pay 2000 fine".
The bankers tray is of soft dark blue
plastic and has a special space for the square game board. In this game
the properties are of course national soccer teams, viz. those of the 22
best clubs of the official worldlist as it is composed by the FIFA on the basis
of the results of the countries in all worldcup finals since 1930.
On the game board they are respectively: Scotland -
Switserland - Romania -
Chile - Mexico -
Belgium - Austria -
Czechoslovakia - The
Netherlands - Poland - Hungary -
Yugoslavia - France -
Sweden - Uruguay -
Russia -
Spain - England
- Argentine - Italy -
Germany and Brasil.
Except for the well-known colored
bars the spaces are furthermore characterized by a T-shirt of the concerning
country.
The stations are replaced by the 4 most important stadiums of France, viz.
Stade Velodrome of Marseille, Stade du Parc de Princes in Paris,
Le Stade de France in Saint-Denis and Stade de Gerland of Lyon.
The 2 public utilities are now Electric Works and Soft drink
manufacturer (marked
by a red beaker but not of Coca Cola!).
It
is remarkable that one can be sent to Jail in this game as well.
The 8 tokens are resp. a shoe, cap, beaker, hamburger, goal,
whistle, bal and the (gold colored) FIFA Worldcup Trophy (with the
mark "1974 FIFA TM©" in the base).

Edition:
Make-Your-Own-OPOLY, Item# 1999
Publisher: TDC Games, Inc./Sagecliff Software, Inc. - 1998
Dimensions of the box: 25.8 x 51.0 cm
The game:
As the name does suppose you have to make your own Monopoly set with the
content of this box. This is however not a Parker Brothers' nor a
Waddingtons' issue and so there is no reference to this "world famous
game". On the contrary, the differences have intentionally been made
considerable:
 |
For that purpose there are 8 spaces instead of 10. |
 |
There are no Chance- and Community Chest fields but Bad News and Good News. |
 |
The Bad News and Good News cards can only be drawn on
two of 4 "station fields". |
 |
On the "Go To Jail" space is FATE!
pre-printed. Here you must draw a Good News or a Bad News card. |
 |
On both the other "station spaces" is already
as a fixed data Play Lotto, so that absolutely no railway
stations can be made. |
Most probable for many a man this will be as many reasons to
not make his own -opoly set with this box.
As the picture clearly shows a number of sheets with
pre-printed stickers are supplied, like for the property deeds, the
Good News and Bad News cards, the banknotes and even the stick
labels for the gameboard and the lid of the box, by which it becomes
your one-of-a-kind board game creation.
The designer of this kit leaves the possibility to hand
write all cards and spaces, but he also supplies a floppy disk and a CD
Rom with software you can provide everything with nice texts and pictures
with. The floppy disk contains 25 images but the CD Rom features over 1,400.
Besides you can practise your own images and scanned pictures.
For that purpose the program immediately shows a color-image of the whole
gameboard as editing screen. By clicking on the desired space it can be
edited to your own opinion. The values mentioned on the spaces however, may
not been changed. On the other hand you can put your proper picture on the
banknotes.
A clear manual helps on printing, cutting and sticking your own set. Should
it however be necessary you can find "answers to frequently asked
questions" on web site: http://www.tdcgames.com/myohelp.htm.
The price of this set amounted in England to £ 16.-
(€ 22.50) June 2004.
Edition: Radio One - Special Edition
Publisher: Waddingtons Games Ltd. -
±1998
Dimensions of the box: 26.1 x 50.3 cm
The game:
This edition is from the collection of David Miller - UK.
The design of this edition is of the
Standard one of 1972 with Ref. # 44021, the red characters of the word
Monopoly on the lid having a blue
border. The word Monopoly on the very standard game board is in open characters.
The BBC Radio One logo is only printed on two places, viz. on the board next
to the Jail corner and Go-to-Jail corner.
An offer on the auction site ebay
in October 2004 introduced the set as
"This version was only given as a prize some years ago, when Radio One did
Monopoly on the Radio for the 'Children in Need charity'."
So it is to be expected the circulation to be very low (in the order of 500
copies?).
This set was sold via ebay in October 2004 at the price of GBP 155.00
(US$290,-)
Edition:

However it is already in the design as later practised by Winning
Moves.
The game board is red
and its midfieldshows 2 football players. The properties in
this edition are of course famous football players and instead
of stations are now obviously stands. Community Chest is Home
Game here and so instead of Chance is Away Game.
From Go onwards the properties are:

Wes Brown - Raimond van der
Gouw - Jesper Blomqvist - In Jail -
Dwight Yorke - MU TV -

"Red Devil", even shown
on the lid. The banknotes are
illustrated with footballs and players.
The dice are a red
and a white football.
The Rules show the players once more and give a summary of the club's history.
N.B.
Two new Manchester United editions has been published since, in 2000

Edition:
Star Wars Episode I, Ref. 40787/102
"Special
Collectors Edition"
Publisher: Parker/Lucasfilm Ltd./Hasbro - 1999
Dimensions of the board: 26.8 x 40.0 x 6.5 cm
The game:
Authorities on this Galaxy event will recognize immediately
their heros and villains of the Trade
Federation on both the lid and the centre field of the gameboard. Of the 8
pewter tokens (with the mark "© LFL", of Lucasfilm)
the 4 heros are Anakin Skywalker, Jar Jar Binks, Qui-Gon Jinn and
Queen Amidala and the villains Darth Sidious, a Battle Droid, Darth Maul and
Sebulba.
There are no houses nor hotels built on the properties
that consist of 28 spaces of the Galaxy, but apartments and towers
instead. The apartments are structures of grey
plastic, while the towers are monumental buildings of goldbrown
plastic. The mortgage side of the property deeds is black.
The Chance- and Community Chest cards have
been replaced by respectively Jedi (blue)-
and Sith (red) cards with
significant (?) texts like:
 |
The Jedi Council Fund expires - You receive # 100. |
 |
Your Galactic senatepension takes effect - You receive # 100. |
 |
Proceed to Otoh Gunga Gungan Sub – If you pass "Go" you
receive # 200. |
 |
Buy Droids for all your properties - Pay # 25 for each apartment and # 100
per tower. |
The currency of the Galactic money is Galactic
Credit. The banknotes are very simple, but there are 5 gold coins (value
# 100) as well, printed with "Galactic Republic". The Rules say about
them: "... for the collector! Should you wish so they can also be used for
larger amounts to pay!"
The practical
"bankerstray" is also of black plastic.
Both dice are of course black, with white pips.
Edition:
Monopoly EURO -
English, ref. 05597
Publisher: Parker/Hasbro, Inc. - 1999
Dimensions of the box: 27.0 x 40.2 x 6.5 cm
The game:
Of course Parker/ Hasbro took the
opportunity of the introduction of the Euro to issue a special edition again.
Was there in 1991 talk of but 12 countries of the European Community (see
the description of the game in the "blue
box"), now 15 countries belong to the European
Union and 7 countries will join in the years to come. The makers of this
game already anticipated by situating these countries at the beginning of the
game. The most expensive properties are the capital cities of the
countries who were first to become member. Groups who became member together are
partitioned to the size of their capital population.
The capital cities and countries are from Go onwards:
Vilnius (Lithuania) - Riga (Latvia)
- Sofia (Bulgaria) - Bukarest (Romania)
- Warsaw (Poland) - Budapest (Hungaria)
- (wrong, this is not the capital!)>Genève (Switserland)
- Helsinki (Finland) -
Stockholm
(Sweden) - Vienna (Austria)
- Lisbon (Portugal) - Madrid
(Spain) - Athens (Greece) -
Dublin (Ireland) - Copenhagen
(Danmark) - London (United Kingdom)
- Luxemburg (Luxemburg) - Brussels (Belgium)
- Amsterdam (The Netherlands) - Rome
(Italy) - Berlin (Germany) and Paris
(France).
The 4 stations became the 4 busiest airports of Europe, namely
Schiphol (Amsterdam) - Rhein-Main (Frankfurt)
- Paris Charles de Gaulle and
London Heathrow. Both utilities became: the European Parliament and the
European Court of Justice.
It is a pitty that there are but 8 tokens this time, a very limited
choice out of 22 countries. Seven of these tokens are the same as those of the
1991 edition. Only the Atomium from Belgium has been replaced by Manneke Pis.
And why are these pewter tokens not as nicely gilded? The carefully edited
booklet of the Rules give a detailed explanation of these tokens.
The 7 different banknotes are nice copies of the real €-notes. De € 1's
are gold and silver colored (plastic) coins. On or over Go you receive €200.
There is no explanation given why the plastic houses with roof edge and
chimney are dark blue now and the hotels
gold brown.
Both dice are dark
blue with gold pips.
Worthy mentioning is the fact that the lid now shows a part of the Go-space with a part of the first and fourth side in perspective. That is
remarkable because this same presentation is also applied by all City Games of
Winning Moves Int. who are issued in the UK, Germany, France e.o.countries since
1998. The bottom
of the box shows again a nice color picture of the gameboard with all its
attributes.
It is obvious to put the differences and similarities with the
European Edition of 1991 on a row:

Because I do not know this TV series I had to read what was said

Pokémon, Ref.Nr. 41357/102
"Gotta catch 'em all!"
Publisher: Hasbro Inc./Waddingtons
Games - 2000
Dimensions of the box: 26.8 x 40.1 x 5.3 cm
The game:
This edition is owned by Matthew Horton - UK.
Again one of those theme games with a nice design and this time
specially made for Pokémon lovers.
There is of course nothing difficult for a Pokémon fanatic, however for a
simple Monopolist it looks nice but the names do not mean so much. A grandson
and great connoisseur of this phenomenon explained the game:
The world of Pokémon consists of Gym's that are in 21 cities, forests,
isles and such. The board's midfield features this World almost
completely.
(The computergame start at Pallet Town (on the game board next to space #145 Zapdos).
From there onwards the gameway goes via Viridian City - Viridian Forest - Pewter City - Mt.Moon Cerulean City
(unvisible under LY) - Sea Cottage (on the
peninsula) - Rock Tunnel with the Power Plant - Lavender Town (the minaret
on the T-crossing) - Diglett's Cave (the boulder under)
to Fuchsia City and Safari Zone
(mid under). The isle with the tapering mountain is called Cinnaber Island
and the 2 islands next to it together are Seafoam Island.)
The Gym's are managed by Trainers. Each Trainer has a preferance for a kind
of Pokémon, allround intelligent creatures, that basically not allow to be
possessed. The Pokémon are divided into 15 classes to be recognized by the logo
before the price. On the game board is choosen for resp.: Boulder - Water - Electric - Grass - Psychic - Poison - Fire
and Earth.
From Go onwards the properties are:
Brock's Gym: #74 Geodude - #95 Onix
Misty's Gym: #120 Staryu - #121 Starmie -
#116 Horsea
Lt. Surge's Gym: #100 Voltorb - #125
Electabuzz - #26 Raichu
Erika's Gym: #71 Victreebel - #114 Tangela -

Weezing
Blaine's Gym: #58 Growlithe - #77 Ponyta -
#78 Rapidash
Giovanni's Gym: #31 Nidoqueen - #34 Nidoking
Instead of stations are 4 Poké-balls (with which you can catch Pokémon): Poké Ball
- Great Ball - Ultra Ball and Master Ball.
The Professor Oak and Trainer Battle cards replace the Chance and
Community Chest cards.
The Poké-money consists of 7 different banknotes, of which the
denominations are: 1 (white) -
5 - 10
- 20 - 50
- 100
and 500. Strange enough the "banker's tray"
only has 5 holes.
Instead of houses and hotels there are light blue
square stackable Poké Centers and red
rectangular non-stackable Poké Marts, all made of transparant
plastic.
The 6 tokens are well-known characters of this world, viz. #04 Charmander, #25 Pikachu, #35 Clefairy, #150
Mewtwo, #01 Bulbasaur and #09 Blastoise. They are packed
together in a pre-shaped holder of black plastic.
The dice are white with black pips.
In order to better match this version of Monopoly with the Pokémon
computer game additional rules have been added: Pokémon Power Doubles.
In case of throwing doubles you may as usual choose for throwing once again or
for a Pokémon Power, subject to the throw. The values are listed in a table in
the Rules.

The surface of not only the game board but of the box as well has been given an
"ancient appearance" by goldy brown stains. |
 |
As the summing up shows the "station spaces" are transport means of
the Pharaohs era. But what a contradiction to apply the modern corner
designs as they are: a rascal behind prison bars, the red
car with white wheels on the Free Parking space and the whistling policeman with
blue cap! Such a thing should not happen but
apparently it was indispensable to protect Hasbro's rights on this Monopoly
edition. |
 |
The bars on top the properties have the usual colors
but filled up with a pattern of stacked stones. |
 |
How pitty it is Winning Moves did not spent a bit more
attention to this very special edition, otherwhise they would have made special
tokens instead of applying just the regular, modern ones like the plane,
a car and so on. |
 |
However, instead of houses and hotels one can now build shrines
and pyramids on the properties. |
 |
The Community Chest spaces show a pharaoh
treasure chest on legs, while Chance spaces show the upper part
of a crook. The corresponding spaces for
the card stacks both show a picture of the O2 bubble. |
 |
See what Mr. Monopoly, coming out the middle O of Monoply,
holds in his hand! |
This is an absolute fabulous edition!
