A. Special Waddingtons issues:

Label nr.166 on the Lim.Leeds Ed.Edition: Leeds, Limited Edition
Publisher: The City of Leeds/John Waddington - Dec.1989
Dimensions of the box: 26.1 x 50.2 cm
The game:
The design of this edition is like the Standard one of 1972 with Ref. # 44021.

Since the GB-standard edition consits of London properties, this Leeds issue is the second city game of England. Only 500 copies of this edition were made, the profit of which - £18,500 - was destined for a project to help the deaf communicate on the telephone.
The owner of edition number 1 is Les Carter, the Lord Mayor of Leeds in 1989.

Ten years after the issue of this very limited edition Paul Robinson of the Yorkshire Evening Post wrote in the paper of 5th June, 1999:

"Why Leeds has the Monopoly - £ 1,650 paid for game based on the city.
The Yorkshire edition of the world's most famous board game might be causing a stir at the moment - but a decade ago it was a Leeds version that triggered Monopoly mania.

Just 500 copies of a board based around the city's streets and landmarks were produced in 1989 in aid of the Lord Mayor of Leeds charity appeal.
And as the years have gone by the sets have become like gold dust among Monopoly enthousiasts who try to collect different versions of the game from around the world. But in the current wave of excitement sparked by the imminent arrival of the county edition, the Yorkshire Evening Post has managed to track down a copy.
Leeds City Council's Coun Les Carter, Lord Mayor at the time the game was released, still have the very first one to roll off the production line.
He said today: "It's never been played - I wanted to make sure I kept it in pristine condition. When I do fancy a game, I just use the normal set I also have. I've been smiling to myself seeing all the publicity about the Yorkshire version. It looks as though we were 10 years ahead of our time in Leeds."
Traditional names given the elbow on the city board included Pall Mall, which was replaced by Great George Street, and Mayfair, which was usurped by Park Row. Trafalgar Square, meanwhile, became City Square while Fleet Street was, aptly enough, changed to Wellington Street, home of the YEP. And Leeds City, Cross Gates, Horsforth and Pudsey rail stations were also given spots on the board in place of Marylebone and so on.
The edition was put together by Leeds-based firm John Waddington, which at the time produced and distributed Monopoly in the UK. It proved so popular that sales of the 500 sets raked in more than £18,500 for Coun Carter's Minicom Appeal, to help the deaf communicate on the telephone. At auction one copy went for £1,650.
And following the success of the idea, Waddingtons was besieged by requests to create versions based around other cities. "The firm refused," remembers Coun Carter. "It said the only reason it had made the Leeds edition was because it was based here." But now games company Hasbro holds the rights to Monopoly and it has given the go-ahead to versions based on cities such as Manchester and Edinburgh and overseas capital as well as the county of Yorkshire
Although Coun Carter is the proud owner of the original Leeds edition he is also considering snapping up one of the White Rose sets. He said: "It would be nice to have both. There's a lot of scope for interesting places in Yorkshire to be included."
* Buy next week's Yorkshire Evening Post to read your ideas for what should be included on the White Rose version - and see if your suggestion was a winner."

B. YMCA logo.Since 1986 TRI-AKTIV the Oslo-N  based games manufacturer produced along with the Y.M.C.A. (Young Men's Christian Association, youth hostels) in Bergen-N a board game based upon Monopoly with the aim of raising funds for that association. Local  businesses took adverts on the property spaces, taking care to cover their cost thus leaving the net profits for the YMCA. This project was such a success that the YMCA decided to expand the project nationwide, then Worldwide under the Tri-Aktiv brand name. In 1992, the manufacture was transferred to the Ricken manufacturer in Viborg, Denmark
From 1990, Tri-Aktiv continued this format in the Benelux countries. The Lyons and Rotary Clubs based in Holland developed along with local businesses and  their local associations a similar game to that of the YMCA.
Also in 1991, Tri-Aktiv teamed up with the YMCA in Great Britain and introduced the same successful formula that had worked so well on the continent. 19 YMCA's developed the theme. Part way through the involvement, all production was transferred to Ricken. (Some uncertainty with one game 'Sheffield' - possibly made by 'Scope')

The format of the games construction is a plastic encased outer which when unfolded double up as the playing surface and rules.
Of the 19 versions produced, 16 kept to a similar design: Green or plum background with red or green pips (Exeter has a different shade of green.) The game's title is in a bordered frame on the top surface. There is a copy of the board's playing surface printed at an angle and over the spline of the casing with next to it a small square showing the participating Y.M.C.A.
The design of 3 editions differ: Their background color is black.

The game's contents are kept in a polystyrene tray, that is removed when playing and used for the bank. All the game's contents are produced in a simple manner:

A pack of Share cards and a pack of  New Share Quotation cards.

A pack of Chance Cards.

The money is printed double sided, usually sponsored. The value of the 5 banknotes is resp.  1000 - 500 - 100 - 50 and 10 pounds.

6 colored plastic cars as tokens

2 red dice with white pips.

C. The distributor:

Discover Publications (International) Ltd.
Suite 6
24 College Lane,
P.O.Box 646
Gibraltar

published a limited number of opoly-games in the late 1990th and soon afterwards disappeared from the market. These games have no relation whatsoever with the publishers of the regular Monopoly game Waddingtons and Hasbro.
Sponsors make possible to issue the editions. The property (Business) prices are always the same as those of the game board with the streets of London, so the cheapest Business costs £ 60 and the most expensive one is £ 400. Also the color of their groups are about the same as of the regular Monopoly board.

All of these editions are made according to the same pattern, viz.:

An illustration of the concerning city on the lid with an overprint of the game board, as well as a picture on the centre of the board.

A player does not receive his "salary" at Sart but 2 spaces later. The Business name changes depending on the City but it remains the place to collect your £ 200.

In case you land on Start you may only roll one of the dice on next turn.

The mid space of each side is a Star (*) Property, sponsored by a local Business. The possession of all 4 gives the highest profit.

The "utility spaces" are sponsored by any local Bussiness. However the two of them form one group.

All corners, including Start (!), are sponsored by local Businesses, however their function is unchanged. A player can only be visiting the Party Tent or he/she can be sent to this place by drawing the card concerned.

There are no houses nor hotels. Instead there are 32 shops (12 mm high cylinders) and 12 superstores (look like hotels with a chimney). Both are made of plastic.

The 6 tokens are plastic "cylinders with ball on top".

Both dice are white with black pips.

The money consists of white banknotes, one-sided printed sometimes also with the name of a sponsor. The denominations are always printed in black in a colored rhombic space : £ 1 - £ 5 - £ 10 - £ 20 - £ 50 - £ 100 and £ 500.

The use of Credit Cards: At the start of the game, all players receive a Credit Card in the value of £ 500. At any time during the game, a player may request £ 500 cash which will be issued by the bank. However, each time he lands on or passes Start he must pay £ 50 interest to the bank.

Each individual space of a group can be mortgaged, only without building. The owner however is allowed to collect rent due and the amount owing is the same as if it were not mortgaged. When the owner passes Start he must pay interest for that mortgaged business, the amount being shown on the card.

There are 2 stacks of 21 cards each situated along side 1 of the game board, underneath the picture. Cards 1 are often red and Cards 2 (next to "Start here") are often blue, but their names are not always the same.

market City Games in Europe since 1998. First in Great Britain followed by issues in Germany and various other countries.
It are all socalled "Authorized Opoly Games", i.e. they are manufactured under the approval of and in cooperation with Hasbro. Like with the American City Games a part of the profit has to come from advertisements of local companies and institutes mentioned on the spaces. The streets prices and those of the other properties are always the same as those of the original game board with the streets of London.

All of these editions are made according to the same pattern, viz.:

The colorfull lid always shows a composition of pictures of landmarks of the city under the Monopoly bar, with in perspective mid-under the first spaces at the left and right of Go. In the lower right corner are always 6 of 10 standard tokens i.e. car, boat, thimble, canon, wheelbarrow and rider-on-horse. The other tokens of the set are dog, hat, shoe and iron.

The back of all game boards is purple.

The Banker's tray is a square tray of red plastic on top of which the double folded gameboard is placed. One hole contains a small, transparant case, presumably for the houses and hotels.

A second, slightly higher tray of green plastic has 7 slots to store the banknotes.

Each set is supplied with a socalled property pouch. According to Winning Moves it is to store the house and hotels.

All well finished green plastic houses and red plastic hotels have overhanging roofs and an excentrically placed chimney.

The dice are white and have black pips.

Page 14 of the Rules always show pictures of all properties of the edition concerned.

The games are always "Made in the British Isles". Where exactly?

The price of these games is rather high and amounted to £ 29.95 (€51.70) in 1998 and 1999.

Newcastle and Gateshead Ed. - 1998Edition: Newcastle & Gateshead, Ref.No. 024
Publisher: Winning Moves Int. Ltd./Hasbro -1998
Dimensions of the box: 26.8 x 40.1 x 5.3 cm
The game:
The comment on the bottom of this edition reads:

"Famed for its party atmosphere take a stroll down Newcastle's famous Quayside, a mere hop skip and a jump from the monumental 65ft high 'Gateshead Angel' by Turner Prize winner Antony Gormley.
Take a browse in the Gateshead Metro Centre, the largest shopping and leisure complex in Europe then head back into the 'toon' to sample one of Newcastle's most famous exports - Newcastle Brown Ale!
Newcastle and Gateshead are the beloved homes of 'The Geordie Nation'. "
(In the early 19th century the word Geordie (referring to George III and IV) was a term of abuse and was linked with idiocy. In the 19th century the middle class of Newcastle disliked and feared the mining community and they probably used the word Geordie as a term of abuse when they referred to pitmen. When the early Hanoverians passed away Geordie gradually ceased to be an insulting word and eventually was accepted as friendly term when applied not only to pitmen but everyone who lived in this area. - From the 'Geordie Dictionary', by Frank Graham.
Stephen Jardin, a Geordie himself, claimes however: The word Geordie originated through the use of a pitt lamp - a geordie - a model in fact only used by people from Newcastle, hence our association with the term, it had nothing to do with King George nor was it a term intended as an insult.

Publisher: Winning Moves Int. Ltd./Hasbro -1998
Dimensions of the box: 26.8 x 40.1 x 5.3 cm
The game:
The comment on the bottom of this edition reads:

"From Edinburgh Castle to the Palace of Holyrood House, the Royal Mile descends the sloping rocky ridge on which the medieval Old Town of Edinburgh was built.
Scotland's story reverbarates through every close and wynd on the historic thoroughfare. Each summer provides a dramatic backdrop to the annual Edinburgh International Festival, the world's largest arts and cultural extravaganza.
The cramped and irregular architecture of the 'Old Town' stands in contrast to the neat symmetry sought by the planners of the eighteenth century 'New Town'.
The city's cherised open spaces, the imposing heights of Arthur's Seat and the gentle panorama of the Pentland Hills combine to create a sense of spaciousness rare in urban areas."

Yorkshire Edition 1999.Edition: Yorkshire, Ref.No. 079
Publisher: Winning Moves Int. Ltd./Hasbro -1999
Dimensions of the box: 26.8 x 40.1 x 5.3 cm
The game:
This set is from the collection of Ted Leydon - UK.

This edition was introduced to the people by the article published in the Yorkshire Post from 1 Dec.2000, written by Chris Benfield:

"It might take a bit of getting used to, but Yorkshire pride requires that your Boxing Day game of Monopoly includes a Chance card with the instruction Go Directly to Bowers Row.
Bowers Row replaces the Old Kent Road in the new edition of the Yorkshire version of the game, thanks to Biffa Waste Services, who have bought the slot for an advertising space. It is the address of their depot at Woodlesford, between Leeds and Castleford. After it comes Wellington Street, Leeds, the address of Yorkshire Post Newspapers, and than a list of possibly even more famous Yorkshire addresses, such as Elland Road, Ilkley Moor and York Minster (occupying the Mayfair square).
Updates include the replacement of Sheffield Wednesday's Hillsborough with Bradford's Valley Parade, in the purple section, as a penalty for Wednesday's departure from their Premier League. "We feel we have been sent directly to gaol without passing Go but we are not going to turn on the the waterworks over it," said a club spokesman yesterday.
That decision was down to the manufacturers but other slots have changed hands as a result of the hotly contested bidding for places, which goes into the thousands for the best slots. John Smith's, the brewers, and the Yorkshire Bank are among those who have dropped  off the board, while the Castleford Freeport company, the Heartbeat TV programm and the Hull-based Humbro-Airfix modelling company have put their home addresses on the Monopoly map for the first time.
Monopoly was originally an American game but Waddington's of Leeds made it a British institution with the original London-based board. Since Waddington's sold the copyright to the name, a number of regional editions have been produced. The Yorkshire set should cost about £ 25."

The comment on the bottom of this edition reads:

"Monopoly, the great property trading board game finds its home in Yorkshire. You can play the classic game with the street names, landmarks and locations which gives the county its distinctive character.
When the Romans came to what is now Northern England, in the years after A. D. 70, Yorkshire, with it three Ridings did not exist. It was not until eight hundred  years later that the boundries of Yorkshire were first marked out.
Yorkshire is the land of the White Rose. The region is served by Britain's fastest rail route, along with International Airports and swift, modern ferry links from Europe.
Yorkshire is a place to watch classic cricket or sample northern ale. To while away the day on golden beaches. To browse in country bookshops and wander historic cities, among them York - one of the medieval showpieces of Europe.
Uncrowded, accessable Yorkshire is perfect touring country with space and solitude never too far from the perfect place to stay."

The comment on the bottom of this edition reads:

"Monopoly, the great property trading board game finds its home in the most charismatic city in the north-west England. You can play the classic game in the street names, landmarks and locations which give the city the style and unique appeal.
From the river banks of the Mersey grew a 13th century medieval town, which prospered through sea trade into the world city it is today. Liverpool's legacy as a thriving port, can still be seen in its magnificent architecture. The 'Three Graces' on the riverfront overlook the 18th century Town Hall on Water Street. From Albert Dock take a walk into the heart of the city - see the splendid neo-classical St Georges Hall or the two cathedrals sitting proud at either end of Hope Street.
Today, Liverpool's heart is beating fast with the focus on the new millennium. It is alive with development and activity. In tune with its vision to be premier European city, Liverpool has made a confident bid to become the European Capital of Culture in 2008, following the 800th birthday the previous year. It is truly a city for all seasons."

Publisher: Winning Moves Int. Ltd./Hasbro Inc. - 2001
Dimensions of the box: 27.0 x 40.3 x 6.5 cm
The game:
This edition is in my own collection. I got it as a souvenir after my son and his girlfriend spent their holydays in this rainy and mosquito stricken country, where he posed his marriage proposal on top the Ben Nevis, UK's highest mountain in July 2002.

The comment on the bottom of this edition reads:

"Monopoly, the world famous property trading board game now finds its home in the historical land of Scotland. Scotland is, quite simply, a wonderfully rewarding and diverse country, encompassing everything from the rolling countryside of the Borders to the wild and weather-beaten islands that arc around its west and norh coasts.
The roots of Scottish History began with the Celts, Scotland's first people and their culture. There followed centuries of kingdoms and struggles for power, leading through the turbulent years of Mary Queen of Scots, the Calvinistic legacy of John Knox to the bitterness of defeat at the hands of the English Invaders.
Scotland then entered an age of industry, which gave the world many major inventions, such as the telephone, the television, Tarmacadam, Chloroform and of course, golf!
Scotland is not just about hills and glens, whiskey and tartan. Her castles, monuments and landscape are the envy of the world."

Second Welsh edition-2007.Edition: Monopoly Yn Gymraeg, b.c.nr.009461
Publisher: Winning Moves - Cyngor Llyfrau Cymru Welsh Books Council - 2007
Dimensions of the box: 26.8 x 40.1 x 5.3 cm
The game:
This edition is owned by David Miller - UK.
It is, like the early Welsh issue "Wales Cymru" from 1999, bilingual game, both English and Welsh

A press release, issued in November 2007 by Welsh Books Council, introduces this interesting edition as follows:

"Cardiff Bay replaces Mayfair in Welsh-language Monopoly
Some of London's main streets are familiar to a host of children and adults through the Monopoly board game, with almost everyone recognising the names of Mayfair, Park Lane and Bond Street.
This Christmas, the towns and cities of Wales will become equally as familiar, with a new Welsh-language version of the game. Cardiff Bay will replace Mayfair and the Menai Straits will take over from Park Lane.
In welcoming the new Welsh-language version, Rhodri Glyn Thomas, Minister for Heritage, said: 'We are extremely pleased that the Books Council have been able to support the Welsh-language Monopoly and its success will not only bring pleasure to many this Christmas, but will also enable families across Wales to play this popular board game through the medium of Welsh.'
Winning Moves, who have produced a number of versions of the popular board game based on different regions of Britain, are pleased to add a distinctive Welsh-language version to the collection, with the players winning or losing their fortune as they travel the length and breadth of Wales.
The company invited the Books Council to assist them in selecting appropriate names for the game board, and the Council sought the assistance of the leading language expert D. Geraint Lewis, who has published numerous dictionaries and grammar books.
'We were delighted to be able to work with Winning Moves to produce the Welsh-language version of this popular board game,' said Gwerfyl Pierce Jones, Director of the Welsh Books Council.
'The Welsh-language version of Scrabble proved to be a best-seller and we are sure that Monopoly yn Gymraeg (Monopoly in Welsh) will have similar success amongst Welsh speakers and Welsh learners of all ages. The whole process was a most pleasing challenge and D. Geraint Lewis's contribution as a consultant was a key factor in ensuring that the game reflected all the different regions of Wales.'
A set of both English- and Welsh-language rules are included with each game, to assist Welsh learners.
D. Geraint Lewis added: 'Nothing gives me more pleasure than seeing people playing board games through the medium of Welsh, and to know that these games are of the highest quality.'"

It was Scarlet Jones, from Aberystwyth, who gave the translation of Cwm-sgwt. She also told me the game contains a Community Chest card that allows you to win £100 from entering a winning poem in the Eisteddfod (a music festival/competion) or from winning the crossword in the "Papur Bro", a small community newspaper which is quite common in Wales.
However, I suppose this opportunity will only be valid in a restricted period?

The price of this edition is £24.99.

The comment on the bottom of this edition reads:

"Famed for its excellent academic reputation, start your journey at Castle Leazes Halls, take a stroll through the Quadrangle before popping into the Armstrong Building, and on to the King's Hall.
As well as being a superb place to live and study, Newcastle has also won the reputation as one of the top places in the world to let your hair down, rubbing shoulders with New Orleans, Amsterdam and Rio de Janeiro. This is obviously due to the people of Newcastle itself, who know a thing or two about throwing a party - especially in term time!"

The comment on the bottom of this edition reads:

"The University of Leeds is one of the largest and most successful in the country, with a long-established international reputation for the high standard of its teaching and research. The origines of the University lie in the Yorkshire Technical College and the Leeds Medical School both of which were founded in the nineteenth century, the University received its charter in 1904.
The University is well known for its warm and friendly atmosphere and is consistently one of the most popular among students applying for undergraduate courses. The largest community of more than 28,000 students means there are plenty of opportunities to follow social, cultural and sporting interests, as well as taking advantage of Leeds' legendary nightlife. The University has strong international networks and students from more than 100 countries study on campus. Leeds graduates occupy senior positions in all areas of the economy, government and the arts all over the world.
Leeds is a cosmopolitan city that is fast becoming a leading European financial and commercial centre. With 2.2 million people within a half-hour drive of the city centre, it has been called 'a European metropolis for the twenty-first century' by the Financial Times. The Virgin Alternative Guide to British Universities places Leeds high on its list as a student city. Our students like the city so much that many of them stay here to live after graduation."
